AMD X470 motherboards round-up: 14 boards for your Ryzen 2

The best motherboards for the AMD X470 chipset

A few months ago AMD introduced its Ryzen 2 processors. This second generation of Zen-based CPUs is a great moment for many to make the switch, now that the most important teething problems have disappeared. Preferably with an AMD X470 motherboard, the high-end chipset for socket AM4. Hardware.Info tested fourteen different X470 motherboards from Asus, ASRock, Gigabyte and MSI - in this review you can read which one you should buy!

At the launch of Ryzen 2 we already discussed six of the fourteen X470 motherboards that we collected for this round-up, but we still had to wait for the entries from ASRock and MSI. We now have several X470 models from all the major manufacturers and sometimes even their entire product range in our lab, so it is time for a major comparison test.

The Asus RoG Crosshair VII Hero WiFi is with an average price of 350 dollars by far the most expensive test participant.

AMD X470: get started right away with a Ryzen 2000-CPU

To be honest, we didn't find the release of the X470 chipset very exciting. Most motherboards in this test look quite similar to their X370 predecessors. Perhaps the biggest advantage is that you can start working right away with a Ryzen 2 processor, without the need for a bios-flash or other madness. Especially since the possibility to flash a new bios without an older cpu is only present on the most high-end boards, we find this especially useful.

On the other hand, you also benefit from one more year of motherboard developments. These may not go very fast anymore in the year 2018, but in terms of addressable RGB and M.2 heatsinks, for example, the average X470 board is better off than the average X370 model.

MSI X470 Gaming Plus
MSI shows that you can also get an X470 motherboard for 140 dollars.
