AMD X470 motherboards round-up: 14 boards for your Ryzen 2

The best motherboards for the AMD X470 chipset

Internal: PCI-Express and storage

The AMD Ryzen 2 CPUs offer a total of twenty-four PCI Express 3.0 lanes, four of which are used for communication with the chipset. Almost all manufacturers also use four for an M.2-ssd and distribute the remaining 16 lanes over the video card slots. With the ITX boards, ASUS TUF and MSI Gaming Plus, the first PCIe 3.0 x16 slot always gets them all, while the other models have the option of splitting them into two parts, thus supporting SLI.

ASRock X470 Gaming-ITX/AC
ITX motherboards like this ASRock X470 Gaming-ITX/AC of course only have one PCIe slot.

Most X470 motherboards feature the six SATA600 ports that come from the chipset - no more and no less. Only on the two ITX boards of Asus and ASRock do we count only four. ASRock has installed an additional ASMedia ASM1061 controller on its X470 Taichi, which provides two additional sata connections. The MSI X470 Gaming Pro Carbon also has eight, but this is achieved by making it impossible to place SATA SSDs in the first M.2 slot.

On the topic of M.2 slots: each board has at least one, although the ASRock X470 Gaming-ITX/ac has it on the back. This is not ideal for NVMe SSDs, as they get quite hot; for that the solution that Asus uses with its RoG Strix X470-I Gaming is a lot smarter.

All ATX boards also have a second M.2 slot, but that's often limited in bandwidth or takes it off your video card as soon as you insert a PCIe SDD. In practice, the second slot is especially useful for mounting a SATA-based M.2 SSD, if only because, in addition to the top models, only one heatsink is often included.
