Flash storage for everyone: 67 SSDs round-up

67 SATA en NVMe SSDs on our new test bench

By

AS SSD

We start our new benchmark suite with two synthetic tests, AS SSD and Atto Disk Benchmark.

AS SSD is a synthetic disk benchmark, optimized for SSDs. For example, the benchmark makes use of non-compressible data and random reading and writing tests are also performed with a so-called queue depth of 64, i.e. with 64 assignments at a time. Please note that all AS SSD test items are relatively short-lived, if the performance level of the SSD falls after a few minutes of paused load, you won't see that in AS SSD scores. That makes AS SSD purely interesting to analyse specific basic features of an SSD. You can easily download the free program yourself and have it tested, so that you can easily compare your own storage with our scores.

AS SSD produces total, read and write scores based on the underlying tests.

At the top of the graph we find the Intel Optane SSDs, which is mainly due to the very good reading performance of those very expensive drives. Among these, Samsung and WD also do well. Many SATA SSDs are around the same level of performance of about 1200 points.

The reading tests below are sequential reading, random reading of 4k data blocks of 1 or 64 at a time and the average access time.

In terms of sequential speeds, the Kingston DCP1000 is the test winner, but in processing smaller transactions, the Optanes are much better.

  • Sequential
  • 4k (1 thread)
  • 4k (64 thread)
  • Access time

The writing tests consist of sequential reading, random reading of 4k data blocks with 1 or 64 at a time and the average access time.

Here, too, the DCP1000 writes the fastest continuously. For 4kB files, Optanes do particularly well with a single thread, while more complicated tasks with many threads are completed at very high speeds by the Samsung 970 Evo.
