AMD Ryzen 5 2600X vs. Intel Core i5 8600K: the best gaming CPU in the year 2018!

Should you get a Ryzen or Core i5, if you're looking for the best gaming CPU?

Benchmarks: GTA V

GTA V continues to be a game that does much better on Intel processors than on AMD CPUs. In both frame rates and frame times, the Core i5 8600K wins convincingly if tested with the RX Vega card, except fat 1440p ultra. There the scores are closer, because the video card is a greater limitation here.

Frame times - GTA V (AMD RX Vega 56)
  1080p - ultra 1440p - medium 1440p - ultra 4K - medium
AMD Ryzen 5 2600X 19 ms 16 ms 20 ms 16 ms
Intel Core i5 8600K 14 ms 12 ms 16 ms 13 ms

Ironically, the Ryzen CPU seems to be doing a little better in combination with a Nvidia video card. Relatively, the AMD processor wins more than the Intel processor in the step to a GTX 1070 Ti, especially when looking at the frame times.

Frame times - GTA V (Nvidia GTX 1070 Ti)
  1080p - ultra 1440p - medium 1440p - ultra 4K - medium
AMD Ryzen 5 2600X 15 ms 14 ms 16 ms 14 ms
Intel Core i5 8600K 13 ms 10 ms 13 ms 11 ms
