Routers up to 130 pounds/175 dollars

The ZyXEL NBG6815, which is available for 140 dollars, does very well at 5 GHz for routers in this price class. Within this test field, the router is able to score in the top 3 in all synthetic as well as practical tests at 5 GHz. Unfortunately, the performance at 2.4 GHz is less impressive. As far as we are concerned, there are still two recommendations to be made in this category.

AVM Fritz!Box 4040
AVM Fritz!Box 4040

If you really want to spend as little money as possible, there is AVM's strikingly designed Fritz!Box 4040, which can be found in our Price Comparison for an average price of 105 dollars. This dual band AC1300 router offers up to 400 Mbit/s at 2.4 GHz and 866 Mbit/s at 5 GHz. Besides the standard four gigabit lan ports and a single wall port, you also get a USB 2.0 as well as a USB 3.0 connection. Control is possible via AVM's familiar web interface as well as via a management app (iOS & Android). If we consider the test results, we see that the Fritz 4040 Box in this category offers an excellent price-performance ratio.

D-Link DIR-878
D-Link DIR-878

If you are prepared to spend just a little more, the DIR-878 from D-Link is the router you need to buy. The DIR-878 was launched in September 2017 and, at the time of writing, costs as much as the ZyXEL in our Price Comparison, although you can easily find it for less. The DIR-878 is a dual band AC1900 router with a total Wi-Fi speed of 1900 Mbit/s, distributes over 600 Mbit/s at 2.4 GHz and 1300 Mbit/s at 5 GHz and supports MU-MIMO. The design is certainly compared to other D-Link routers, such as the DIR-879, which is quite modest. As far as performance is concerned, the DIR 878 manages to get the stage on each of the seven main components with twice gold, four times silver and once the bronze medal.

  • AVM Fritz!Box 4040
  • D-Link DIR-878
  • No MU-MIMO support
  • Limited total Wi-Fi speed of 1266 Mbit/s
  • Competitively priced
  • Excellent price/performance ratio
  • USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 connection

  • No settings app available
  • All-around, this router performs excellently
  • Lots of bandwidth for relatively little money
  • Support for MU-MIMO
