Lyra is the mesh system of the Taiwanese manufacturer ASUS. The price of a set of three at the time of writing costs on average about 523 dollars. A loose node will cost you an average of 232 dollars. Lyra is a tri-band mesh set from the AC2200 class and combines theoretical speeds of 400 Mbit/s at 2.4 GHz and twice 867 Mbit/s at 5 GHz, one of which serves as a wireless dedicated backhaul.
ASUS has opted for a seemingly simple design: white in colour and round in shape. At the top of the disc-shaped nodes we see the brand name of the company. We also see an edge running from above that makes a perfect circle and turns out to be an illuminated ring. The semi-transparent top of each node is also illuminated from below. That sounds cool, but the light isn't necessarily something you're waiting for in your home or bedroom.
At the back we find two ethernet ports that are neatly put in a metal jacket, flanked by the power supply. Furthermore we see two physical buttons; at the bottom a reset button and at some distance from the Ethernet connections we find a pairing button. The nodes are interchangeable and can therefore each also be used as a standalone router, although one of the three has a blue sticker placed above the Ethernet ports, with the text 'start'.
Unlike several other mesh manufacturers, ASUS offers its users both a full web and app interface. The possibilities to set up everything to your liking are, as we are used to from this manufacturer, considerable. This is a point on which it stands out from other providers and, as far as we are concerned, is worthy of compliment. Another striking point is that the availability of updates is indicated by a message, installation of which must be confirmed by the user.
When we look at the performance, we are not immediately impressed by what Lyra shows. The device is in third place once, at a speed of 65 Mbit/s from node 1 to Laptop 3 - in theory the most difficult connection. On the other hand, this mesh set ends up at the bottom of the ranking no less than four times. Certainly in view of the presence of the wireless dedicated backhaul (867 Mbit/s), better choices can be made based on the price-performance ratio.
