Corsair K63 and K63 Wireless Gaming Lapboard review: PC-gaming on your lap

Wireless gaming with mechanical switches

By

Introduction

Wireless and mechanical: it is a combination that is currently featured on very few keyboards. Corsair introduced a version of its K63 gaming keyboard at the CES in January, which works without a cord, the K63 Wireless keyboard. Not only does it prevent messy cables on your desk: its compact size makes it ideal for mobile use. The manufacturer has also realised this: in addition to the keyboard, an accessory came onto the market which enables you to use it on the couch, the K63 Wireless Gaming Lapboard. In this review we look at both products.

Corsair continues to expand its popular K-series of mechanical gaming keyboards with new models. Last year, for example, the manufacturer came up with the Corsair Gaming K63 keyboard, a small, 'tenkeyless' keyboard without a numpad. Corsair had previously made a smaller version of the K70 with the K65. The K63 offers the same compact size, but is aimed at people with a smaller budget. The plastic frame, with the ledge above the keys and the glossy Corsair logo, is very similar to the keyboards in the cheaper Strafe series. Corsair has however added media buttons.

A small mechanical keyboard is nice for compact desktops, but with the K63, you are bound to use a cable. This is not convenient for mobile use, and in general wireless peripherals also come in handy to prevent cable junk on your desk. Wireless models with mechanical switches have so far been rare; until now, we only discussed the Logitech G613, a full-size model.

Under the moniker 'Unplug and play', Corsair introduced a range of wireless peripheral devices at the CES. This includes, in addition to a wireless mouse, a cable-free version of the K63 keyboard. Apart from the wireless connection, the model is almost identical to the wired version. Maybe you might still want to keep a wired connection for the fastest games, but for strategy games, for example, a wireless keyboard is not problematic. The K63 Wireless also gives you the typing feel of a mechanical model.

Corsair saw more possibilities in the wireless connection than just enhancing your desk organisation. What if you don't want to sit in your desk chair at all, but enjoy playing on the couch in front of the TV? For that purpose Corsair offers the K63 Wireless Gaming Gaming Lapboard, an accessory for the K63 which allows you to use the keyboard on your lap. For this, the brand bases itself on the previously released corded Lapboard.
