While Intel's socket 2066 is not as large as the Threadripper-socket it is still special that ASRock can make a mini-ITX motherboard for it. On this unique board of 17 by 17 centimeters you can use an 18-core processor. The ASRock X299E-ITX/ac offers X299 in ITX format: a good idea or the ultimate concession?
High-end platforms are usually a good option for those who have more money to spend. The difference with the regular processor series is mainly in the quantity: some more cores, some more memory channels, some more PCI-Express lanes and so on. ITX therefore does not seem to be the most suitable format for an X299 motherboard- the vast majority of the boards for this platform are ATX format or even bigger, but ASRock still succeeded in manufacturing an ITX board.
The designers of the ASRock X299E-ITX/ac probably had to endure a lot of headaches during the development process, because the short summary of the layout reads: nothing fits without special solutions. The full-size memory slots have been exchanged for four (!) vertically placed sodimms, the sata connectors and usb 3.0 header are placed on a separate circuit board and the only m.2 slot on the front is placed in a pcb that is some kind of modified sodimm slot.

The ASRock X299E-ITX/ac has an average price of 515 dollars. We cannot really compare that price with anything else; there are no other X299 mini-ITX motherboards. However, this price does put the board in the top ten list of most expensive X299 motherboards. It is worth mentioning that this board only supports Skylake-X CPUs: this ASRock will not work in combination with a quad-core Kaby Lake-X.
