At the IFA Berlin in September 2017, Sandisk presented a new top-of-the-line model in its Ultra microSD series, the Sandisk Ultra MicroSDXC UHS-I A1 400GB. This memory card really is of microSD size, but it nevertheless offers a storage capacity of up to 400 GB - more than 50% extra storage compared to what was possible until now!
It has only been a year since the first 256GB microSD memory cards became available. The fact that an increase in capacity of more than 56% was possible in such a short amount of time is largely due to the fact that this is one of the first cards to use 3D-NAND, which is moreover controlled by three bits per cell.
Most people will use a microSD card in devices like smartphones or tablets, as cameras often have slots for regular SD cards. These are usually cheaper and faster - at the same storage capacity, of course. Therefore, Sandisk has had the memory card certified according to the A1 rating, which indicates that the random reading and writing performance is high enough to be able to easily install Android apps on it.
In terms of speed, Sandisk only guarantees a reading speed 'up to 100 MB/s'. The writing speed is lower according to the manufacturer's product page, but how much is not specified. As a minimum, following from the various standards that the memory card meets, this is 10 MB/s. Whether this is higher in practice will be shown by our test. Incidentally, you can download the Sandisk Memory Zone-app for Android, which allows you to automatically back up photos and videos, as well as exchange files between the microSD card and your phone's own storage.
