2014 was the year we first acquainted ourselves with the Plantronics Rig headset. Meanwhile, the manufacturer has expanded the Rig gaming headsets series with more models, of which we have tested two relatively affordable examples. The Rig 400 and Rig 600 cost 75 dollars and 100 dollars respectively and come with a few special features.
The most special aspect of these headsets is that the Rig 400 is an official Dolby Atmos headphone. In the box we find an activation code for the corresponding software, which normally costs you 18 dollars via the Windows Store. An important note in this respect is that “Atmos for Headphones” works differently from Atmos that we know from home cinema sets and the cinema, about which more on the next page.
Where the Rig 400 is unmistakably a gamer-focused headset, the Rig 600 looks a lot more neutral. With this slightly more expensive model from the Rig series you will not draw too much attention in public spaces. Both headsets are equipped with a microphone that can be disconnected and can therefore also be used as regular headphones.
As mentioned before, you pay 75 dollars for the Rig 400 including the Atmos license, while the Rig 600 costs 100 dollars. For the time being, the various shops selling the game headsets seem to be adhering to this price. The Rig 400 is therefore in the sailing waters of the Logitech G430 and Kingston HyperX Cloud Stinger, among others, while the Rig 600 is just a little cheaper than popular headsets such as the HyperX Cloud and Corsair Void, both of which are for sale for around 110 dollars.
