Comparison: i5 4670K vs. Core i5 & Ryzen 5

In the table below we compare all the benchmarks of the Intel Core i5 4670K with the Coffee Lake i5 and the Ryzen 5.

The Coffee Lake generation's integrated video chip is a solid 40% faster than the one in the Haswell i5. Only Dota 2 seems to have little benefit from this. The AMD Ryzen 5 1600X does not have an integrated video chip.

In single-threaded benchmarks, the i5 8600K is 20 to 30 percent faster than the i5 4670K, largely due to higher clock speeds. In multi-threaded benchmarks, due to the increased number of cores we see much larger differences of sometimes up to 90%. The Ryzen 5 1600X also mainly does well in multi-threaded tests; per core it is only a little faster than the i5 4670K.

Intel remains by far the fastest in the game tests. The Ryzen cpu sometimes even has difficulty to outperform the performance of the i5 4670K, while the i5 8600K leads to a very substantial boost of performance, especially in GTA V and Battlefield 1.

In the frame times we see significant differences across the board. Although the fps values do not always show that, games run much smoother on both the Core i5 8600K and the Ryzen 5 1600X. In absolute terms, however, the current Core i5 stays ahead of the Ryzen 5 in all scenarios, sometimes even by far.

In terms of power consumption, the Coffee Lake in idle is considerably more economical than the Haswell, while the Ryzen 5 uses significantly more energy. Power draw under load has increased in both cases. The extra cores apparently consume more than what has been saved in recent years through process and architectural improvements.
