Corsair AX1600i power supply review: the first PSU with gallium nitride transistors

Efficiency breakthrough in high-end segment



Today we take a look at a new high-end power supply manufactured by Corsair, namely the AX1600i digital power supply. It immediately stands out because of its high output, but it is also the first PSU that uses gallium nitride transistors, because they are normally made of silicon. This innovation is supposed to take the efficiency to a level that we have never seen before. Can Corsair fulfill the big promises?

Corsair AX1600i

The AX1600i is a high-end 1600W power supply with all specifications that you expect in that segment. 80Plus Titanium, modular, a semi-passive FDB-fan and fully equipped with Japanese capacitors that have a rating of 105 °C: everything that a power supply enthusiast wants. In terms of efficiency Corsair even claims that it surpasses the specs of 80Plus Titanium by a fair amount. 

Like its predecessor, the AX1500i (that was released in 2014 and is always sold out due to the mining hype), it also offers support for digital management via Corsair Link. Using this software you can set your own fan curve and change between a single- and multi-rail mode. For the latter you can also set an OCP-limit per individual rail. 

Corsair AX1600i

On the back we find a 'selftest'-button, which allows you to check whether or not the power supply works. For this the 24-pins ATX-cable needs to be connected. As soon as you press the button, the power supply performs a self test and the led turns green or red depending on the result. 

The Corsair AX1600i has an MSRP of 611 dollars, which is 61 dollars more than the AX1500i. As most other high-end power supplies manufactured by Corsair the AXi-series has a warranty of 10 years. In the box you can find a luxurious cable cover and three magnetic plates to give your power supply a colour accent that suits your own taste: black-white, blue or red.
