The amount of Ultra HD monitors available on the market grows steadily while their prices continue to drop. If you need a new monitor, you definitely want to consider an UHD-model. This test offers you a good overview, as we test 22 of these monitors.
Nowadays you have more choice than ever if you want to purchase a new monitor. The time that everything was possible, as long as it was full hd, is definitely over. Aside from higher resolutions you can choose for extra wide models, monitors with (a lot) higher than regular refresh rates and curved monitors. All of this in sizes of up to and more than 40 inch diagonal.
While a lot can be said for these different sizes and models, it is rather clear that the standard monitor will be an ultra hd-model in the near future. Within this class there will without a doubt be a lot of different variants, such as ultra wide and curved, but about 4000 horizontal pixels is the new norm.
Use and necessity
We often notice critical readers that question the need for that many pixels in the reactions below our reviews. After all, full hd is ‘good enough’. We can be short on this: the experience of a monitor with a lot higher pixel density is superior to that of one with relatively few pixels per square centimer. Nobody that used a ‘Retina’ iPad will want to go back to a first generation model, simply because everything looks a lot better thanks to the extra pixels.
The same goes for ultra hd monitors. Even if you use 200% scaling, effectively having the same work space as a full hd monitor, the image, diagonal lines, circles and text look a lot better when the extra pixels are used to refine the colour transitions. More and more programs support this. As is more often than not the case, you need to experience this yourself – after that, you will be persuaded.
Aside from the fact that it looks better, having extra pixels also offers extra functionality. For example, the miniatures in the Explorer Window are a lot sharper making them easier to identify. You can also see more details in photos at full size, making it easier to work. In games you can see more detail and the big textures that you bought a graphics card with a lot of memory for will look amazing. If you do not use (a lot of) scaling, ultra hd monitors offer (a lot) more work space compared with full hd models. This makes it easier to work with large documents, video editing, complex programs or simply a lot of programs at the same time.
For this article we tested 22 ultra hd-monitors using our new test method. We separated the models in this test according to their diagonal. Of course there are models that are absent in this test, meaning that we see this as a set of basic information that we will continue to expand in the future.
