Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1070 Mini-ITX review: cute 1070

The fastest Mini-ITX graphics card at the moment

Gigabyte is the first to manufacture a so-called Mini-ITX-version of the GeForce GTX 1070, the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1070 Mini-ITX. We have tested it and you can already get your hands on one, even before any of the competitors have shown a glimpse of a small variant. Did Gigabyte rush their design, or is it an excellent card – we shall see!

It is known that a ‘Mini-ITX’ graphics card is mostly about as long as a Mini-ITX-motherboard: exactly 17 centimeters. This leaves no space for enormous heatsinks with two or three fans, as we see with regular models. Instead these cards are all about getting rid of as much heat as possible with limited space. For that, Gigabyte uses an aluminum heatsink with three copper 8mm-heatpipes.

Atop the heatsink is a relatively large 90mm-fan, making the card 13 cm in height – this is more than the standard specification of a PCI-Express-slot. If you have a case that does not fit a full-size graphics card you will have to check if the card still fits. The fan supposedly offers excellent airflow because of the stripes on the blades; it also turns off when the graphics card is idle.

The PCB has 5+1 phases for power supply, which means the GPU has one phase more than the reference-PCB of the Nvidia Founders Edition. Gigabyte gives clockspeeds of 1531 MHz for the GPU with a boost to 1721 MHz, an overclock of a small 40 MHz in comparison with the reference card. However, because of the limited cooling solution it is very interesting to see what remains of this overclock in practice; we will find out in our throttling test later in this review.

In terms of monitor-outputs, you have the choice between DisplayPort, HDMI and DVI-D, where only the last one is double. An odd choice, because most of the time manufacturers prefer DisplayPort and HDMI. Furthermore, an HDMI-signal is easily converted to DVI. If you want to connect multiple monitors or an extra tv, it might be a bit tricky. The card does not have a backplate.

At the time of writing the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1070 Mini-ITX has an average price of 550 dollars.
