Seasonic Prime Titanium 650W PSU review: unprecedented efficiency

Seasonic scores with first PSU from new line-up

By

Introduction

Seasonic might not be the largest power supply manufacturer, but they do have a very good reputation. Since power supplies become better every single year, they'll have to put in extra effort in order to distinguish themselves in terms of quality. Therefore Seasonic revealed at Computex that they'd be refreshing pretty much their entire line-up. The Seasonic Prime Titanium 650W is the first new model we'll be taking a look at.

The Prime series will have a phased release and it consists of three product lines: Gold, Platinum and Titanium, which of course refers to the achieved 80Plus certificate. There will be models with capacities ranging from 650 to 1,200 watts. At the end of the year Seasonic will even release a fanless Titanium model with a capacity of 600 watts.

Seasonic Prime 650 W 80+ Titanium

For the time being this Prime Titanium is the flagship model. In terms of last generation's high-end power supplies there have been a number of improvements. Seasonic power supplies weren't the quietest under load, which is why the much improved noise levels are one of the most important aspects Seasonic pointed out to us. The hybrid mode, which you can turn off with the press of a button on the back, turns off the fan up to about 50% of the indicated load at a temperature of 25 degrees Celsius. If the temperature rises to 40 degrees, the fan won't turn until about 30%, to ensure that the power supply won't overheat.

A bufferzone between the active and passive modi, a so-called hysteresis, prevents the fan from constantly turning itself on and off if the temperature is close to the limit temperature. The fan itself is a 135mm fan from Hong Hua, which utilizes an FDB bearing.

On the next page we'll discuss other improvements made to the Seasonic Prime series, but before we do that, we wanted to discuss pricing. The 650W model will cost you about 220 dollars. Of course this is a lot of money for a power supply with a relatively low output, but you have to keep in mind that there aren't many 80Plus Titanium models in this segment. Therefore we can't call them significantly more expensive than the competition's models. The 750W and 850W will of course cost you more. The 850W model also isn't released yet, it will release in about a month.
