Assassin's Creed Rogue: tested with 23 GPUs (including frame times)

Which graphics card works best in the latest Assassin's Creed game?

Introduction

Assassin's Creed Rogue is already the seventh entry in the Assassin's Creed series. After its initial release for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 in late 2014, PC gamers got to join in the fun during March of this year. We tested the game using 23 modern GPUs, ranging from the humble AMD Radeon R7 240 to the Nvidia GeForce Titan X, in order to determine which graphics cards are capable of producing playable framerates at three different resolutions and with two different quality presets.

Assassin's Creed Rogue was released at approximately the same time as Assassin's Creed Unity, a game that ended up being a bit of a disaster for Ubisoft due to the large amount of bugs and the very high system requirements. Although critics were still fairly lenient on Unity, end users had no mercy: the game's average user score on the ranking site MetaCritic is, at the time of writing, an embarrassing 2.5. Rogue is doing a lot better in comparison, with an average score of 8.1 for the PC version, almost one point higher than the Xbox 360 and PS3 editions. Rogue's storyline takes place between Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and III, with the last mission acting as a prologue for Unity. With regard to game elements, Rogue is comparable to Black Flag, featuring missions on board ships and the familiar third-person style on land.

Assassin's Creed Rogue (PC)

Engine

Just like other recent games from the series, Assassin's Creed Rogue uses the AnvilNext engine, which has been created specifically for these games. This engine features a number of PC-specific effects, such as Horizon Based Ambient Occlusion and Percentage Closer Soft Shadows, that were developed in collaboration with Nvidia.
