Cooler Master CM 690 III review: bigger and better

The third incarnation of the popular CM 690 sets a new standard

The stakes were high for Cooler Master. The CM 690 series has always been a popular and well-respected one, and Cooler Master could afford to drop the ball with the third version. The first two offered a perfect balance of price, features, effective cooling and low noise, and we're happy to report that the CM 690 III continues that trend. Not only that, the new version includes the necessary additions to make the CM 690 III fully up-to-date. It has a solid build quality, assembling a system is easy, there are plenty of cable management options, the storage options are flexible, there is enough internal space for large graphics cards and coolers and even liquid cooling components. It's a very complete chassis, in other words.

Of course there is always room for improvement. The cover on top is too loose, for example, which takes away from the overall feel. Early versions of the chassis did not have rubber around the cable holes inside, but Cooler Master informed us that will be remedied. Customers with the early version can get the rubber pieces free of charge.

The CM 690 III is one of the best at cooling components, as you can see here, while the price is excellent. At this price point, the CM 690 III is a uniquely complete chassis of outstanding quality. The improvements may be incremental over the previous version, but it's the perfect evolution and sets a new standard for mid-range desktop chassis. Only one award is appropriate here, and that's the Gold Award.
