We tested the Western Digital Red 4TB disk the same way we tested the disks in our latest large round-up of 3.5-inch disks. In the charts on the following pages we included all disks we tested with 2 TB or more storage capacity.
We performed the following tests. The HD Tune benchmark gives us the average transfer rate and access time of each disk. The Atto benchmark measures how fast disks can read and write small (4 kB) and larger (1 MB) files, four simultaneously. The most important benchmarks are PCMark Vantage and PCMark 7. Both are based on the hard disk activity of real-life applications, from the Windows Vista era and from Windows 7.
We also measured the energy consumption and the noise production of each disk, both when idle and during a random access test. The noise production test is done in a sound-proof cabinet at a distance of 10 cm.
In the charts the previously tested disks are blue, the Western Digital Red 4TB and the other Reds are green.
