Uros Goodspeed review: MiFi, but bigger

MiFi in most of Europe

By ,

Introduction

A so-called MiFi can be a practical little device to bring with you on vacation if you want internet access without paying an arm and a leg. The Finnish company Uros has a very interesting one, which can be used in quite a few different countries. We took a closer look at the Uros Goodspeed to find out exactly how well it works, and we took it on the road as well.

When you go abroad it's worth putting some thought into your planned data usage. You can of course just use the 3G or 4G connection on your smartphone or tablet, and while practical, it can get very expensive very quickly. Many providers offer packages for internet access in other countries, where you pay a flat daily fee for a certain amount of data traffic. It's not always the most practical solution, especially if multiple people would like to have wireless internet access. Letting everyone go online via your smartphone isn't really a great option.

MiFi can be the answer in such cases. These are devices in which you can put a SIM card bought in the country you're visiting. Up to eight devices can connect to it wirelessly, in order to go online. 'True' MiFis also have a battery.

Another option is to bring a normal travel router, and use a USB adapter and a SIM card to connect to a 3G or 4G network. Those types of routers also tend to have a battery. The TP-Link TL-MR3040 is a good example here.

You could use a travel router compatible with 3G sticks such as the TP-Link TL-MR3040...

Both basic MiFis and travel routers that can take 3G sticks aren't always that user-friendly. You need information for logging into the provider of the SIM card, at least an Access Point Name (APN) and often a username and password. You can find these via Google, and if you're lucky they're pre-programmed in the MiFi or travel router, but it's usually not an automatic process. Another issue with travel routers is that they don't always support all types of 3G sticks.
